Not all women become mothers and not all men become priests. Our religion places great importance on Motherhood. Wives and husbands are called to find perfection in unitive and procreative love. Unitive love never separates relationships from sexuality as the world often does. Fruitfulness makes procreative love true to life. Children are a gift from God and are the living image of God. We cooperate with the creator and a miracle of God’s love is multiplied. Life is holy, as holy as God. Women and men alike stand in awe of these truths.
Mother’s Day takes on even greater meaning because of our religion. Mary’s highest title is “Mother of God.” The wise and nurturing mother steadfastly cares for her children. The sacrifices that mothers make are part of the self-giving roles women nobly accept. Our gratitude to God for our mothers is a debt of gratitude we owe to God. Let us be thankful to both God and our mothers. I stand in reverential awe of motherhood. Happy Mother’s Day!
Sincerely in Christ,
Very Reverend Andrew Kemberling, V.F.
