Our 8th grade graduates this week and over the last few weeks we have celebrated First Communion and Confirmation. Rites of passage are a part of life. They help us move on to the next phase of our lives. I will be completing three years as your pastor and I have observed a pattern of young people moving on without including the parish. I do not know where they are going but I know that they are not here. Graduating from 8th grade does not mean graduation from Saint Vincent de Paul Parish. I would like everyone’s help. It is easy to complain but fixing the problem will take work. I’m open to suggestions and I hope the recommendations I get are solution-oriented.
I always like to say, “Remember the days when missing mass of Sunday was a sin?” It still is! Attending Mass on the weekend is a moral obligation. It is the third of the 10 commandments. When summer travel starts taking up our time, we are obliged by love of God to keep holy the Sabbath day by attending Mass. The one problem I’d like to fix is getting more of our parishioners to mass each weekend especially our young people. I said to a twenty something the other day, “The church is always open on Sundays.” Let us be solution-oriented and let us congratulate our young people who are moving on to the next phase of their lives.
Sincerely in Christ,
Very Reverend Andrew Kemberling, V.F.
