Thanksgiving Day is celebrated this week. Gratitude is an important idea within our faith. In stewardship spirituality we give thanks to God for all that God has given us. Looking at the blessings of God and seeing them as a gift is the practice of a good steward.
The opposite of gratitude is greed. Our society makes it easy to be greedy. It helps us confuse our wants with our needs. Do we really need all the stuff that we have? Can we lighten our load?
Living with simplicity helps us be grateful. Everything we have is a gift and when we receive a gift we give a gift in return. Giving thanks to God involve giving him a gift. The gift that we can see represents the gift we cannot see. Ultimately we give the gift of our self. Let us remember that people are more important than things. Let us be grateful for the people in our lives.
Gratitude is the reason why we have a need to give. Let us give thanks to God for all that he has given us. Let us pray that those in need will receive from us the gifts that are given to God. May our charity help the needy. We never lose our need to give.
Sincerely in Christ,
Very Reverend Andrew Kemberling, V.F.
