St. Benedict of Szkalka
RELIC IN CUSTODY
Benedictine Monk. Martyr (11th C.)
FEAST DAY: May 1
PATRONAGE: Sailors on River Váh
He was a Benedictine Monk at the St. Hippolyte monastery on Mount Zabor outside Nitra in modern Slovakia, taking the name Benedict. He was the student of St. Andrew Zorard. With his abbot’s permission, Benedict withdrew from communal life to live nearby as a hermit. He is noted for his ascetic lifestyle. He was strangled by a gang of thieves who believed he was hiding a treasure in his cave and then they dumped his body into the River Váh. A year later, his body was found in the river perfectly preserved being watched over by an eagle.
