    Baptism
"And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters."
    Gen 1:2
    • The God who created us is a Father to us all, but He desires to bring us into a special relationship with Himself through Baptism! Jesus goes out of His way time and time again to encourage us to be washed in the waters of life and welcomed into new life with Him. Even though we might not look any different, we have been transformed on the inside into creatures newly capable of love and worship. In a special way, Jesus asked us to “let the little children come to [Him],” and we are thrilled every time a new, little soul joins the ranks of the Catholic Church!

      FAQs

Do I have to wait until my baby is born to do baptismal prep?

Not at all! In fact, we encourage parents to complete all of the baptismal preparation process before birth in order to have the baby baptized as soon as possible. We understand that many are unable to do this, however.

Godparent questions? Please see this 5 minute video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zK8i4zp37HQ

What are the requirements for godparents?

      • You may choose up to two godparents.
      • If you choose to have only one godparent, they may be male or female.
      • Godparents can be relatives but not parents or legal guardians.
      • Godparents must be at least 16 years old.
      • Two godparents do not need to be married to one another.
      • Two godparents may consist of one male or one female, two males or two females together are not allowed to be godparents*
      • At least one of the Godparents must be a Catholic who:
        • has received all of the sacraments of initiation (Baptism, First Communion, and Confirmation).
        • is attempting to live out their faith through prayer, going to Mass and Confession, being part of their faith community, and loving one another, including those in need.
        • is either married within the Church or unmarried, divorced or widowed and not living with a partner
      • For the second godparent, you may choose a non-Catholic Christian. Designated as a "Christian witness,” they will participate in the baptism with the other godparent. A Christian witness is permitted as long as you have one Catholic godparent.
      • You may have as many Christian Witnesses as you like. These can be referred to as godparents to the child. However, you must have at least one eligible godparent.
      • The Christian witness must be:
        • baptized
        • attempting to live out their faith through prayer, going to Church and being part of their faith community, and loving one another, including those in need.
      • If a godparent cannot be present at the baptism, they may be represented by proxy. The proxy can be Catholic or a Christian of another denomination. The godparent may designate the proxy on the Godparent Form.
      • The selection of godparents may not be changed after the baptism.
      • *You may have as many people listed as Christian witnesses as you would like. Such Christian Witnesses can be referred to as godparents by the parents to the child. However, only two people can be officially listed on the baptismal certificate as godparents, and they must be of different sexes and meet all of the godparent requirements.

Do we have to raise the child in the Catholic Faith?
Yes. To see the requirements for raising someone in the faith, click here.

Do both parents have to be catholic?
Nope! Technically, neither of the parents have to be Catholic. However, they must intend to raise their child in the Catholic faith. As long as one parent is able to raise the child in the catholic faith, baptism is permitted.

Do I have to be married in the Church in order to have my child baptized?
No. As long as one parent intends to raise the child in the catholic faith the child can be baptized.

Do I have to complete a baptism course?
Yes. If you have not completed a baptism course in the past four years, you will be required to do so. If you completed your course over four years ago, you will need to complete another one.

Do I have to be a member of the parish to have my child baptized or go through baptism classes here?

We strongly encourage everyone to reach out to the church whose parish boundary they are in. Please find your parish via this website: https://archden.org/boundaries/
If you live within our parish boundaries, we are glad to have you. If you live outside of our parish boundaries and are not a member of our parish, please reach out to [email protected] to discuss your reasons for choosing St. Vincent's for baptism. Reach out to info@saintvincents.org if you would like to become a member of our parish!

What is a typical donation to the parish for a baptism?

In no way is a donation required, and no one will be disappointed if you do not donate! That said, people generally give a small amount both to the church and the minister. The general range for both is $25-$100, and people are invited to give according to their means.
